Florence Behrens was born on December 19, 1921 to Henry and Marie (Christensen) Larsen on the family farm in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Jacksonville, Iowa. She attended school in Jackson Township #4.

On January 11, 1939, she was united in marriage to Orvis Behrens. Six children were born to this union: Richard, Keith, Betty, Lyle, David, and Peggy. In March of 1940, they moved their family to a farm in Jackson Township and farmed there until 1976. At that time, the family moved to their son Lyle’s acreage in Center Township. Florence loved to bake and cook for her family and always made her children’s favorite meals and desserts from recipes she had in memory using a pinch of this and a dash of that. One of her hobbies was quilting and she loved to play cards, especially Rummy, Pitch, and Pinochle.

Florence and Orvis also enjoyed square dancing and polkas but their pride and joy was their house on the lake in Okoboji where they moved in April of 1993 after Florence retired from her job of twenty-two years at Variety Distribution in Harlan. This was their home until 2003, when they decided to move back to Harlan. She remained a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville.

Florence died on Monday, September 24, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, nine months, and five days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Keith Behrens, her brothers Leonard and Ivan Larsen, and her sister Leona Jensen of Alexandria, Minnesota.

She is survived by her husband Orvis Behrens of Elk Horn, Iowa, her sons: Richard Behrens and his wife Maudie of Kingman, Arizona, Lyle Behrens and his wife Connie of Jacksonville, Iowa, and David Behrens and his wife Hattie of Harlan, Iowa; her daughters: Betty Jacob of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Peggy and her husband William Fewell of Lake View, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
