Floyd W. Rhodes, the son of Frank and Anna Rhodes, was born on March 3, 1929 in Greenfield, Iowa. He belonged to the Greenfield Methodist Church and graduated from Greenfield High School.

On September 7, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mary M. Lahey at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield. Three children were born to this union: Jane, Dennis and Mary Lynn. After their marriage, Floyd worked for the Greenfield Free Press, then the Guthrie Center newspaper. In 1953, Floyd and Mary moved to Avoca, Iowa, where Floyd became the foreman for the Journal Herald newspaper. They joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Floyd later served as the City Clerk in Avoca for many years, before retiring in 1991.

Floyd taught Mary to play golf, and they spent many happy hours together at the Avoca Golf Club, joining “The Nerd Herd” for a number of years. They played bridge in a couple’s club. They always enjoyed heading south to Kansas City to watch sports and music activities in which their grandsons participated. Floyd belonged to the Rotary Club, serving a term as President, and the Avoca Community Club.

The light went out of his life when Mary died on June 1, 2007. He moved to Peace Haven in Walnut, then to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. This is where he died on September 27, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-five years, six months and twenty-four days.
