Frances Lucille Justice, daughter of Robert and Theresa (Wetzel) Scott, was born December 17, 1927 on her parent’s farm in rural Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Defiance. She went to country school near Defiance and after graduation, attended Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa for Normal Training and received her teaching certificate. Frances returned to rural Defiance and taught school for a short period of time.
On May 23, 1948, Frances was united in marriage to Clifford Charles Justice at the United Methodist Church in Defiance, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm outside of Manilla until 1956 when they purchased a farm of their own east of Irwin. It was here that they raised their three children: Jane, Jim and John.
Frances loved working the farm with Clifford and spent much of the day in her pantry - preparing food and canning the vegetables and fruits that her garden and orchard produced. Frances also baked, with her cream puffs and rhubarb pie with fresh ice cream being family favorites. Frances enjoyed listening to “Big Band” and polka as she knit and did needlework and on weekends went square dancing around the area with Clifford - but her favorite pastime was attending every event that her children participated in no matter the subject or venue.
Although she and Clifford were traditional farmers, they were best known for the raising and selling of ostriches. This business garnered them not only a good deal of attention, but the opportunity to travel to many Ostrich related events around the country.
In 2010, she and Clifford moved from the farm to the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan where they were residents until their passing, Clifford in 2015 and Frances on March 23, 2018 having attained the age of 90 years, three months and six days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Jane, son Jim, Grandson James Stuart (John) and sisters Mildred Pedersen, Irene Scott and Roberta Bradley. She is survived by her son John and Diane Gentile of Bradenton, Fl., Daughter-in-Law Marcy Justice of Bradenton, Fl., Grandsons John Charles and Douglas Richard Justice, Diane's daughter Samantha Marie Gentile, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
