Frances LaVonne Pauley was born January 14, 1930 to Frank and Clementine Sick in Avoca, Iowa. She was baptized on December 27, 1931 at the Lutheran Church in Avoca and later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. She attended country school in Shelby, Iowa and Lincoln Township School through the eighth grade. She graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1948.
During her junior and senior years of high school, Frances took college teaching courses and practiced teaching in Lincoln 5 Country School. She took the State Teachers Test and received a Normal Training Certificate to teach kindergarten through eighth grade. She taught 1 year at Fairview Township Country School #4 and substituted the following year in Lincoln Township Country School #5 as well as schools in Harrison County.
On April 26, 1949, Frances was united in marriage to Norman J. Hansen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. To this union three children were born: LaVerne, Larry, and Laurie. They started farming in 1949 southeast of Harlan and later farmed near Tennant, Iowa. They moved to Harlan in 1975. She was a very good cook, cooking at various restaurants in the 70's and 80's, The Chicken Hut, Evergreen Inn, and Red’s Cafe.
After the death of Norman in 1980, Frances continued to make her home in Harlan. On November 17, 1984, she married Lawrence Pauley. She joined St. Michael’s Catholic Church the following year. They traveled to South Texas in the winter months and enjoyed attending flea markets. Frances also enjoyed attending auctions back home, reading, painting, Bingo, and playing cards like Euchre and Pitch.
Frances died on Monday, February 25, 2019 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-nine years, one month and eleven days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, sisters Arlene Stinn, Emma Schneckloth, and Doris Stinn, brother Lloyd Sick, sister-in-law Judy Hansen, and brothers-in-law Gordon Hansen, Wilfred Stinn, Richard Schneckloth, and Bernard (Vern) Stinn.
She is survived by her children LaVerne Hansen and his wife Jan of Harlan, Iowa; Larry Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; Laurie and her husband Rick Schaben of Harlan; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister Ruth and her husband Roy Fries of Harlan; sisters-in-law Lois Jean Sick of Harlan; Donna Hansen of Corley, Iowa; brother-in-law Gary Hansen of Corley; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
