Franklin Maynard Havick was born October 15, 1913, to Franklin Mareclin Havick and Essie Amelia (Bryan) Havick in Shelby County, Iowa, at his parents� farm home. He was the eighth child out of a family of ten. He grew up on his father�s farm and attended school at Tennant, Iowa. He drove a "school bus", a team of horses and wagon, when he was in the eighth grade. On April 12, 1936, Franklin was united in marriage to Evelyn Junette Fick of Harlan, Iowa. They moved to a farm six miles northeast of Oakland and set up farming with his brother, Elmer, and then later with his brother Everett. In 1944, Franklin and Evelyn purchased a farm one mile south. In 1955, the family moved to their current farm near Oakland where in earlier years he milked forty cows.
Four children were born to this union: Merry Beth, Susan, Frank , Jr., and Paul. Franklin lived for his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he also enjoyed visiting with other family and friends. For the last six years, he has hosted a Fourth of July celebration on the farm.
In 1985, Franklin semi-retired but continued to stay on the family farm where he raised calves and helped with the harvest. Franklin also enjoyed his time on the family farm and even mowed his own lawn last week.
Franklin died on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Alegent Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-three years, nine months, and four days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; five brothers: Claude, Elmer, Harold, Glen, and Everett; and four sisters: Gladys Klitgaard, Helen Christensen, Esther Davis, and Mabel Davis.
He is survived by his children: Merry Beth and her husband Gary Nilan of Oakland, Iowa; Susan and her husband Mike Hogzett of Harlan, Iowa; Frank, Jr. Havick and his wife Nita of Oakland, Iowa; Paul Havick and his wife Diane of Chariton, Iowa; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law: Wilma Havick of Harlan, Iowa and Betty Hankins of Grand Island, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 23, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 2:00 PM service. Interment was at Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa with Kerri Havick, Heidi Hoffmann, Laura Hogzett, Kelli Beckel, Robin Bennett, Missy Whitfield, and Bill Hughes as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Matt Hogzett, Harold Hoffmann, Tom Beckel, Kyle Bennett, Kyle Whitfield, Jake Havick, Chris Hogzett, and Evan Havick
