GRAVESIDE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR FRED AND GOLDA RUTH CHRISTIE: 5:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 at Oakland Cemetery, Denison, IowaNO VISITATION Fred William “Ted” Christie was born in Denison, Iowa, May 2, 1916, the son of Charles and Nellie Scott Christie. He was raised in Denison where he graduated from high school with the class of 1935. Following high school he worked part time as school custodian filling in for his ill father so he could keep his job.During World War II, from May 19, 1942 until his honorable discharge November 26, 1945, Fred served his country in the United States Army being awarded five Bronze Stars and one Purple Heart. Battles and campaigns he served in included Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland.Following the service Fred returned to Denison where he began a 31 year career with the R.E.C.On April 27, 1947, Fred was united in marriage with Golda Ruth Furne at her home in Arion, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children: Fred, Jr., Jean, Jodi and Judy. They made their home in Denison in a house that was moved from where Eventide now stands to 419 North 18th Street. Fred continued his career with the R.E.C. as a lineman and later in their warehouse until retiring in 1978. In 1978 Fred and Ruth moved to Des Moines and assisted their son James in his coin business until returning to Denison in 1984 where they continued to help James.In his leisure hours Fred was an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling in leagues, dancing, card playing, reading western novels and watching westerns on television. In earlier years he was an excellent roller skater.He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison, and an over 60 year member of the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa.In November of 2011 Fred and Ruth moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where Ruth died August 24, 2014.Fred died early Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 99 years, 2 months and 20 days.Including his parents and his wife Ruth, Fred was also preceded in death by one son Fred William Christie, Jr., one daughter Judith N. Simpson and two brothers: Herbert and Harry Christie.Those remaining to cherish his memory include three children: James Christie of Denison, Iowa; Jean Lindsay and husband, Robert of Glidden, Iowa; and Jodi Johnston and husband Dean of Denison, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; one brother, Frank Christie of Yakima, Washington, one sister, Ellen Murphy of Blair, Nebraska, other relatives and friends.Graveside Memorial Services for Fred and his wife Golda Ruth were held at 5:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Military Honors were by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa and Taps were played by Tara Meinen.
