Frederick William “Bill” Fastje, Jr. was born in Denison, Iowa, August 3, 1921, the son of Frederick William and Marie Alice Namanny Fastje. He was raised in Denison graduating from the Denison High School with the class of 1939. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart after being wounded while serving in the South Pacific. On August 15, 1950, Bill was united in marriage with Delores Rothfolk at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa and their union was blessed with two sons, Tom and Dan. They made their home in Denison where Bill was a carpenter and furniture maker. Bill died Saturday, December 18, 2010, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Edward Fastje; and two sisters: Grace Mower and Carmen Randall. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife: Delores Fastje of Denison; two sons: Tom Fastje and Dan Fastje and wife, Cindy of Denison, Iowa; four grandsons: Jake and Ben Fastje of Des Moines, Iowa, Nicholas Fastje of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nathan Fastje of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by Larry Boeck singing “What a Friend We Have In Jesus”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers included his grandsons: Jake, Ben, Nicholas and Nathan Fastje. Following the services the family invited those in attendance to join them at Cronks in Denison for fellowship and a luncheon.
