Gale Alvin “Bud” Reis, son of Henry Elton and Gladys Esther (Hardy) Reis, was born October 9, 1935 in Woodbine, Iowa. He attended country school in the Vail, Woodbine and Denison areas as his family moved. After completing 8th grade, Gale remained home and helped his father on the family farm. He then went on to work on the railroad and at the local Conoco station.In 1955, Gale moved to Carroll and began working at Crouse Cartage out of Carroll, Iowa until 1968 when he began his long career at the IBP Plant in Denison, Iowa. Bud was baptized May 11, 1971, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he was then confirmed on May 20 that same year. On August 19, 1972, Gale was united in marriage to Carol Ladwig in Denison. Together, they raised six children: Debra, Dennis, David, Derrick, Daniel and Dustin in Denison.Bud continued working at IBP until his retirement in 1997. During this time he was also helping Carol as a custodian at the Methodist Church in Denison from 1982 to 1999 and then as an attendant at the Power Wash carwash in Denison until he retired again in 2016.He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, gardening, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren. Bud also loved nature and feeding birds and one particular squirrel that he became quite fond of over the years. “Porker,” as he was called, was spoiled with some of the best corn Gale could find. Bud spent many hours through the years watching Porker out of his front window.Gale died at his home in Denison, surrounded by his family, on March 23, 2017 having attained the age of eighty-one years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Beulah Crane, Leoda Blunk, Leonard Reis, Merlyn Reis, Vernon Reis and Lamone Reis; his mother and father-in-law, William and Helma Ladwig, brothers-in-law Gene Bretey, Kermit Crane, DeLaine Blunk, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Reis.He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Carol Reis of Denison; his children: Debra (Larry) Pieper of Denison, Iowa, Dennis (Michelle) Reis of Genoa, Nebraska, David (Christy) Reis of Carroll, Iowa, Derrick Reis of Carroll, Iowa, Daniel (Erin) Reis of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Dustin (Kara) Reis of Waukee, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law: Marcella Reis and Darlene Reis of Denison, Iowa, Larry (Annie) Ladwig of Phoenix, Arizona, Billy Ladwig of Kansas, Judy Bretey and Donna Ladwig of Carroll, Iowa, Gary (Nancy) Ladwig of Charter Oak, Iowa, Glen (Maralee) Ladwig of Minnesota and Debra (Adam) Lahlou of Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa with Rev. Joshua Keinath and Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music Selections were a recording of “Home” and Congregational Hymns of “Nearer My God to Thee”, “Old Rugged Cross”, and “Rock of Ages” with Dianne Furne serving as organist. Pallbearers were Debra Pieper, Larry Pieper, Denny Reis, David Reis, Derrick Reis, Daniel Reis, Dustin Reis and Jaxon Reis. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon provided by Zion Evening Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements where on Monday, March 27, 2017, a visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
