Garland Meredith Barratt, son of Thomas and Ora (Thompson) Barratt, was born November 4, 1927 on a farm near Irwin, Iowa where he lived his entire lifetime. In 1928, he was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin. He attended Danway School, Polk #4 Country School, and graduated from Irwin High School was the class of 1945.
Garland enlisted into the United States Navy on September 28, 1945. He entered into active service on November 1, 1945 during the World War II effort, which awarded him the World War II Victory Medal. He served his country honorably until he was discharged in November of 1946. Garland returned home to help his father and brother on the family farm and in addition to farming they enjoyed raising black angus cattle. Tom Barratt & Son’s Aberdeen Angus farm was established, their breeding was recognized throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
On February 28, 1954, Garland was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Duke at the Irwin United Methodist Church. They were blessed with two children Mara Lynn and James Frederick. Along with farming, Garland worked at the County A.S.C.S. for many years measuring land. He was a member of several organizations the Shriners, Masons, Shelby County Cattlemen and the Irwin United Methodist Church, where he received the Special Recognition Pin in 2007. He also served on the Irwin/Kirkman School Board.
In 2015, Garland went to live at Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa, where he died on Sunday, February 18, 2018, attaining the age of ninety years, three months, and fourteen days. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by siblings Marjorie Greene, Thomas Gale Barratt, Phyllis Thompson, and infant twin grandchildren: Nick and Max.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Beverly Barratt of Irwin, Iowa; daughter Mara O’Hara of Irwin; son James Barratt of Audubon, Iowa; grandchildren: Tommy Bomstad and his fiancé Nikki Mowery, Samantha Bomstad and Alexis Bomstad; great grandchildren: A.J., Gunner and Audrey; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
