Garry L. Gaul was born on February 27, 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was adopted by Cyril and Angela Gaul and was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. He attended and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School with the class of 1961.
After high school, Garry worked on his father and uncle's farms until he joined the military and honorably served in the United States Army National Guard. Upon return from the military, Garry worked as a mechanic and operated a caterpillar constructing terraces while continuing to help on the family farms. He was a “Jack of all trades”, buying his own milk truck and running a delivery route, selling Combined insurance and running his own lawn spraying business. He had a strong work ethic and was very intelligent. If he wanted or needed a new skill, he not only learned it, he mastered it.
Garry was united in marriage to Grace Chamberlain on June 27, 1964 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Three daughters were born to this union: Laurie, Katherine and Kristine. After their marriage, they made their home in Earling, Iowa.
He was always a salesman ready to barter to make a deal, often softening the toughest sales with a mischievous grin. Garry had many layers to his personality and like an artichoke once you got past some of those outer layers you found he had a big heart. He loved his family and was boastful to others about how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. Garry had many loves and hobbies. He was enthralled by anything mechanical, especially cars and his motorcycles. He enjoyed nature and animals, mastered photography and loved building and flying model airplanes. He enjoyed grilling, baking and using his smoker and always shared his cooking successes and a few failures with his friends. One of Garry's favorite past times was just sitting on the phone and shooting the breeze with friends and loved ones. Daily, Garry was inspired by positive thoughts and quotes and always started and ended each day with prayer.
Garry died on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at home in Earling, Iowa attaining the age of seventy-three years, five months, and six days. He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Grace.
He is survived by his children: Laurie Dunlap of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Katherine “Kat” Gaul of Omaha, Nebraska and Kristine "Krissy" Gaul and her fiancé Thomas Kurtz, Sr. of Portsmouth, Iowa; grandchildren: Jacob Dunlap and wife Jenni; Eric Dunlap and wife Kelli, Kailiana Dunlap; Sophia Kurtz; Serena Kurtz; Thomas Kurtz Jr. and Secilia Kurtz; great-grandchildren: Landon; Zoey and Wyatt Dunlap and Berklyee Kurtz; mother Angela Gaul of Earling, Iowa; sister Claudia Connolly of Omaha, Nebraska; brother Jim Gaul and his wife Janice of Earling, Iowa; son-in-law Tom Dunlap of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
