Gary “Tootie” Wilke, son of William and Lena (Sondag) Wilke, was born May 20, 1936 in Dunlap, Iowa. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling, Iowa through grade school. On April 14, 1954, Gary enlisted into the US Navy, he was stationed in San Diego, California. He served his country honorably until May 21, 1954.

Gary was united in marriage to Mary “Mitz” Pauley on July 27, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. To this union seven children were born: David, Larry, Tom, Charlene, Dennis, Roger, and Mark.

Gary worked at Wilson’s Pack in Omaha, Nebraska and Iowa Beef in Denison, Iowa. In 1969, Gary started his own business being the local butcher at Portsmouth Locker in Portsmouth, Iowa until retiring in 1982. He was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547.

Gary enjoyed fixing things, and could fix anything from electric motors to mowers to sewing machines. He helped many people in the area that were housebound with projects that they needed done.

Gary died at his home in Portsmouth on Sunday, July 22, 2018 attaining the age of eighty-two years, two months and two days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mitz, son Larry, siblings Elroy (Helen) Wilke, Raymond Wilke, Don (Valerie) Wilke, Sylvan (Rose) Wilke, Virgil Wilke, Norbert (Dorothy) Wilke, Joseph (Mary) Wilke, Kenny Wilke, Robert Wilke, Billy Wilke, Stella Wilke, Dorette Wilke, Margie Wilke, Betty Wilke, Pat Sondag.

He is survived by his children David Wilke of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Tom Wilke of Council Bluffs; Charlene and her husband Chuck Darrell of Ek Horn, Iowa; Dennis Wilke and his wife Pam of Council Bluffs; Roger Wilke of Westboro, Missouri; Mark Wilke and his wife Lisa of Council Bluffs; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother Gene Sondag and his wife Linda of Grand Prairie, Texas; sisters-in-law Peggy Wilke of Omaha, Nebraska; Monica Wilke of Panama, Iowa; Betty Gentile of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
