Gaylord Ivan Johnson was born on January 4, 1919 in Jackson Township in Shelby County, Iowa. He was the youngest son of Woodman and May (Hess) Johnson. Gaylord attended country school at Jackson Township Number 8 until eighth grade when he had to start working on the family farm due to his father having heart problems. He was baptized at Altamont Baptist Church and served as treasurer, trustee and board member for many years.
On June 28, 1939, Gaylord was united in married to Mildred Christiansen. To this union, they had two sons: Richard and David. Gaylord and Mildred farmed in the Cuppy’s Grove Community for several years before moving to Gaylord’s parents farm in Jackson Township for 20 years. Gaylord and Mildred moved back to Cuppy’s Grove until 2010 when they moved to Peace Haven in Walnut prior to their last and final move into the Avoca Care Center.
Gaylord enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing and playing cards. He restored old tractors and owned many including an old Fordson. Gaylord and Mildred traveled to all 50 states except Alaska. They spent their winter months in Apache Junction, Arizona for twenty-seven years.
Gaylord died on Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Avoca Care Center having attained the age of ninety-nine years, four months, and seven days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons David and Richard Johnson; brothers Everette and Herman Johnson; sister-in-laws Gladys and Glatha Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of seventy-eight years Mildred Johnson of Avoca, Iowa; daughter-in-law Marlene Johnson of Harlan, Iowa; step grandchildren: William Steinman and his wife Linda of Emerson, Nebraska; Kathy and her husband Darrin Schnepel of Forney, Texas; Kristine and her husband Greg Gillian of Wausa, Nebraska; step great grandchildren: Tiffany Schnepel of Forney, Texas; Paige and Piper Steinman of Emerson, Nebraska; Derek Gillian of Wausa, Nebraska; step great-great grandchild Amari Schnepel of Forney, Texas; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
