Genevieve was born on January 16, 1924 to William and Catherine (Schechinger) Gaul in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her Catholic faith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School where she valued her education and throughout her life would often tell us that "she learned that way down in the grades". She remained able to recite poems, the Gettysburg address, and other things that the Nuns had taught her. When playing games, you wanted Gen on your team, especially when playing fact games like "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader" or other trivia and geography type games.
She grew up living on the farm outside of Earling. She had many wonderful stories of her childhood growing up with 10 siblings, with lots of fun, practical jokes, mishaps, and hard work. She grew up without a refrigerator, toaster, electric iron, air conditioner, fans, and a TV.
While at a dance in Defiance, Iowa, she met "The Man of My Life". They dated for two years going to movies, dances, and games. On February 10, 1948, Vernon and Genevieve united in marriage. They lived on a farm outside of Defiance. She helped with the farming and her days included a large vegetable garden, many flower beds, and taking care of her 6 children. She loved to laugh and have fun with her family. She was an excellent cook and baker, using many of the vegetables and fruits that she preserved. She made the holidays a special event that included "fancy" meals using the good china and cloth tablecloths.
In 2012, she moved to Elm Crest Assisted Living where she enjoyed her time being involved with the many activities. She spent many hours reading books of all genres. She read the daily newspaper to keep up with current events, watching TV, especially ball games with the Royals and the Creighton Blue Jays being her teams.
On May 30, 2019, Gen passed away at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon; grandchild Helen King; Great Grandchild Ryder Reseter, and siblings: Lipharda, Lawrence, Joseph, Aloysius, Odelia, Marie, Suzanne, Anthony, Pauline and Ivo.
