George A. Rewerts

George Arthur Rewerts was born on April 29, 1944, to Rhiny and Selina (Loehr) Rewerts in Defiance, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance. He attended St. Paul�s Grade and High School and graduated with the class of 1962. Later he attended Commercial Extension Business School.
On February 6, 1965, George was united in marriage to Miss Judith Wolff at St Mary�s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Lance, Bruce and Jay.
George was an active member at St. Peter�s Church including parish council member, church choir and lead singer for forty years. He was a city council member for twelve years, volunteer fireman for forty years serving four terms as fire chief. George owned and operated The Defiance Lumber Company.
He played six years professional baseball as a pitcher in the New York Yankees Organization. George also coached little league baseball for eighteen years and also the Defiance Basketball Town Team. He loved spending time on his boat, telling bad jokes and keeping things in working order around his and others homes. He semi retired in 2006 and continued living in Defiance.
George died on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of sixty-seven years, two months, and twenty-four days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Judy Rewerts of Defiance, Iowa; children: Lance Rewerts of Ames, Iowa; Bruce Rewerts of Englewood, Colorado and Jay Rewerts of Urbandale, Iowa; two grandchildren: Laramie and Benjamin; sisters: JoAnn Moore of Omaha, Nebraska and Dorothy Krueger of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were the Defiance Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. Serving as casket bearers were Bob Wells, Don Krueger, Kurt Wolff, Tim Coenen, Myron Schaben, and John Fromm. Interment was at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance.
