Gerald “Jerry” John Schiltz, son Lawrence and Anna (Ebert) Schiltz was born November 15, 1928 in Arion, Iowa. He attended school until the 10th grade at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Dunlap, Iowa. On June 30, 1946, Jerry enlisted into the United States Navy, he served his country honorary until April 30, 1948.
On November 25, 1952, Jerry was united in marriage to Nola Schmidt in Portsmouth, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Sandra and Roger. Along with farming, he also sold seed for Wilson Hybrid. He also enjoyed repairing automobiles, doing yard work and loved animals, dogs and cattle.
Jerry was very involved with serving his community, he was a member and served as commander of Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547. He also served as a member and President of Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department. He sat on the Water Department board for the town council.
Jerry loved going to the races. He simply loved life and people. He never let anyone go forgotten.
Jerry died on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-two years and nine days. He was preceded in death by his wife Nola Schiltz, parents Lawrence and Anna Schlitz, brothers Art and Don, sister Marcella Molone, and son-in-law Kenny Kenkel.
He is survived by his daughter Sandy Kenkel of Harlan, Iowa; son Roger Schlitz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sisters-in-law Orma Fieber, Joan Leinen, Fran (Joe) Bowen, LuAnn Issac, brothers-in-law Mick Schmidt, Leon Schmidt, Gary (Pat) Schmidt; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
