Gilbert B. Berninghaus
August 16, 1932 — November 10, 2013
Gilbert Bernard Berninghaus was born on August 16, 1932 to Rudolf and Meta (Bierstedt) Berninghaus in West Bend, Iowa. He graduated from West Bend High School, his lay training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and obtained his Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. He was ordained on March 13, 1994. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On October 21, 1953, Gilbert was united in marriage to Gayle Anliker in West Bend, Iowa. There were four children born to them: Gwen, Gisele, Gloria, and Garth.
Gilbert served many congregations as a pastor. They included locations in Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska. He learned sign language and was able to sign for the deaf in his congregation at Bethlehem Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Omaha, Nebraska. Gilbert and Gayle were also house parents for students at the Montana School for the Deaf.
He enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle, hunting, fishing, and reading, but mostly, spending time with his family. He was a fan of many sports and loved to sing. He was often asked to sing the Lord’s Prayer at weddings and funerals.
After his retirement in 2001, Gilbert and Gayle spent time in Montana and Iowa. It was in Harlan, Iowa, that he died on Sunday, November 10, 2013 having attained the age of eighty-one years, two months, and twenty-five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Leona Herman, and brothers Paul, Edwin, and Toby.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years Gayle Berninghaus of Harlan, Iowa; daughters Gwen and her husband Gene Ott of Connersville, Indiana, Gisele Berninghaus and her husband Tim Van Eyck of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Gloria Music of Gillette, Wyoming; son Garth Berninghaus and his wife Cheryl of Poulsbo, Washington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother Delbert Berninghaus of Emmettsburg, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Rev. Merlene Ostebee and Rev. Gene Ott officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Friday, November 15, 2013 at Peace Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa.
