Gilbert Hanson
November 19, 1919 — August 15, 2010
Arthur Gilbert Hanson, son of Bennie and Mina (Heglin) Hanson, was born on November 19, 1919 in Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul�s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa, where he was baptized and confirmed. He attended the Danway Country School and Kirkman High School where he graduated with the Class of 1936. After one year at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, he returned home to help on the family farm.
On February 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to Darlene Dickinson at St. Paul�s Lutheran Church, which was then four miles south of Irwin. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in February of 2010.
Gilbert always operated a stock and grain farm until 1988 when he retired and moved into Harlan, Iowa. With his son Karl and his grandson Gabe, it makes five generations to farm this same soil.
He enjoyed the annual family camping vacations at Okoboji, woodworking, fishing, the County and State Fairs, and Republican politics.
He has served on the church council, secretary of the Beef Producers, several years on the board of Farmers Home Administration and various Farm Bureau boards.
Gilbert died on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of ninety years, eight months, and twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mildred, an infant sister, and his granddaughter April Van Meter.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Hanson of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Peggy and her husband Ron Doonan of Jacksonville, Iowa, Karl Hanson and his wife Cindy of Kirkman, Iowa, Laura and her husband Mike Albert of Willmar, Minnesota, and Linda Van Meter of New London, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at St. Paul�s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa, with the help of Pastor Raymon Pedersen. Serving as casket bearers were Emmert Andersen, Delbert Hull, Nate Ahrenholtz, Gary Hanson, Allan Ickes, and Lance Axland. Interment was held at Danway Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa.
