Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, IowaVisitation: From 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Pfannebecker Funeral Home, Denison, IowaBurial: Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa Gladys Mae Burmeister was born November 27, 1915, the eldest daughter of Emil Otto and Helena Hulsebus Burmeister in Denison Township, Crawford County, Iowa.  She was baptized at home June 17, 1916, by the Rev. William Frese and confirmed by the Rev. E.E. Greene at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, Iowa, November 27, 1938.  In 1946 she transferred her membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. In 1917, the family moved to a farm south of Buck Grove where she grew up.  She attended the local rural schools and after graduation from the 8th grade helped her folks on the farm.  Later she worked in various homes in the area and in Sioux City and Ames. On September 16, 1945, Gladys was united in marriage to Harry F. J. Groth at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buck Grove. They made their home on the Groth family farm in Goodrich Township and were the parents of three children: Earl, Sheila and Tom.  In 1982, they moved to Schleswig which was their home until she moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in 2009 where she passed away late Saturday, March 29, 2014.  At the time of her death she had been blessed 98 years, 4 months and 2 days.  Harry passed away in 1994.Gladys was a member of Immanuel Ladies Aid for many years and enjoyed helping tie quilts for charity.  She also enjoyed gardening, baking and sewing.  She will be remembered by her family as a very hard worker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Harry, her parents, Emil and Helena Burmeister, her brother, Leo (Shorty) and his wife Lorraine Burmeister and three brothers-in-law: Walter Maack, Herman Kahl, Jr. and Carl Beermann. Those remaining to cherish her memory include three children: Earl Groth and wife Teresa of Denison, Iowa, Sheila Groth of Schleswig, Iowa, and Tom Groth of Denison, Iowa; two grandchildren: Carri and husband, Lucas Schroeder of Stewartville, Minnesota, and Kevin Groth and wife, Sarah of Johnson, Nebraska; three great grandchildren: Elijah, Hannah and Carter Groth of Johnson, Nebraska; two sisters: Doris Kahl and Helen Beermann both of Denison, Iowa; sister-in-law, Louise Maack of Denison, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa with the Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” with Marlene Hight serving as organist. Pallbearers were Kevin Groth, Lucas Schroeder, Donald Kahl, Ron Beermann, Mark Burmeister, and Daryl Pedersen.  Immediately following the service, everyone was invited to fellowship and a luncheon at the church provided by the Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid. Graveside rites and burial were held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home www.pfannebecker.com in Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements where visitation was held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
