Glenn Franklin Petersen was born on October 25, 1922 in rural Shelby County near Kimballton, Iowa, to Hans and Doris (Christiansen) Petersen. He was baptized at First Christian Church in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Jackson Country School No. 5 in Jacksonville, Iowa. Glenn later enlisted into the United States Army Air Corps. He served his country honorably from February 17, 1943 to March 16, 1946 as an Administrative Clerk after attending the Administrative and Tech School in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On October 13, 1946, he was united in marriage to Irene Mae Christensen at the First Christian Church in Harlan, Iowa. Seven children were born to them: James, Brian, Debra, Donna, Dennis, Gaige, and Scott.
Glenn served as the Director of Admissions for the Capitol School of Hairstyling in Omaha, Nebraska for over twenty years. He also conducted seminars for private cosmetology and barber schools across the Midwest.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Glenn died on Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, eleven months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents Hans and Doris, his wife Irene, son Brian, and infant sister Fern.
He is survived by his children: James Petersen of Red Oak, Iowa, Debra Petersen of Harlan, Iowa, Donna Petersen of Harlan, Dennis Petersen of Harlan, Gaige Petersen and his wife Marianne of Omaha, Nebraska, and Scott Petersen and his fianc� Kim of Harlan; sixteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Brunhilda "Hita" Petersen; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Rev. Paul Reynolds officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Gary Scott, Randy Armentrout, Mike Byrnes, John Helling, Jim Zimmerman, Elliott Svensen, Dick Anderson, Mark Hervey, and Merlin Buthmann. Serving as casket bearers were Chad Hendricks, Michael Zubrod, Chad Spencer, Garrett Petersen, Brice Petersen, and Gavin Petersen. Military Rites were performed by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
