Glenn Eugene Voge was born on October 16, 1930 to Norris and Lily (Bamesberger) Voge on a farm near Portsmouth, Iowa. He graduated from Minden High School with the Class of 1948 and began farming with his father in Clay Township. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean War in the anti tank division and the DMZ. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned to farming until his marriage to Kathryn Ann Seaman on November 5, 1961 in Atlantic, Iowa. They became parents to two children: David and Donna.
Glenn became a salesman for Moorman Feeds in the Atlantic area. He attended agricultural college in Lincoln, Nebraska and upon graduation, was employed at Iowa State University Research Farm in Ankeny, Iowa. In 1972, the family relocated to Harlan where Glenn was employed for several years as a maintenance engineer with the Harlan Community Schools and seventeen years at the Baptist Memorial Home. He worked road construction and part-time at Pamida until his retirement in 1995.
Glenn coached Little League for several years and had a coaching philosophy that affected the lives of the team members, one of whom sent a lasting tribute that said, “I appreciate everything your Dad did for me as a kid. He was an excellent coach, whom I try to be half of what he was as a coach, leader, mentor, and a great adult friend”. When he wasn’t coaching Little League, Glenn could often be found pitching or catching with one of the neighborhood kids who wanted some practice.
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and University of Iowa fan but his favorite teams were those his grandchildren were on - including soccer in the rain (and sometimes snow), cross country, biddy ball, football, track, LYO basketball and baseball. He enjoyed gardening and made the trip to his vegetable garden on the farm for several years, sharing with many, and took great pride in having a well cared for lawn. He loved to visit with people and could talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything.
Glenn died on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center just two days before his eighty-fourth birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Louise Voge, and brother Dale Voge.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years Kathy Voge of Harlan, Iowa; son David Voge and his wife Angela of Harlan; daughter Donna Gross of Carroll, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Alex, Jordan, Drew, and Jacob Voge all of Harlan and Ashley and her husband Josh Henry, Alyssa and Zach Gross all of Harlan; two great-grandchildren: Peyton and Kyzer Henry; other family members and friends.
