Gloria Faye Mills was born on March 8, 1937 to Francis and Elsie (Brix) Andersen in Monroe Township. She attended Monroe Country School No. 1 until the eighth grade and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1955. She worked for an attorney in Harlan until her marriage.
On December 26, 1956, Gloria was united in marriage to Edwin Mills at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. They made their home in Laurel, Maryland, where Ed served in the Army at Fort Meade. Gloria worked for Air Arms Division Westinghouse until the birth of her first child. Four children were born to this union: Denise, Sherry, Wade, and Kevin.
They returned to Monroe Township in 1958 where together they managed grain and livestock farming while raising the children.
Gloria was an active member of her church and involved in many church-related ministries. She was recognized as Iowa Mother of the Year in 2007 for the Iowa Mothers Association, held leadership positions in 4-H and Cooperative Extension work, and worked with the Pork Producers/Porkettes on the local, state, and national levels.
She served on the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the FmHa Board, and the Farm Service Committee Board, Christian Women�s Board as well as several organizations while wintering annually in southern Texas.
Gloria died on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at her home having attained the age of seventy-three years, nine months, and twenty-one days. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Ed Mills of Harlan, Iowa; her children: Denise and her husband Bill Broveak of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sherry and her husband Gaige Lytle of Harlan, Wade Mills and his wife Hollie Hansen of Battle Lake, Minnesota, and Kevin Mills and his wife Lori Kohles of Harlan; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers: Donald Andersen and his wife Clarice of Harlan and Lowell Andersen of Harlan; other family members and many friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. A private inurnment was held at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.
