Grace E Hass Profile Photo
Grace Elizabeth Hass was born on March 22, 1917 in Denison, Iowa. The third child of seven born to Michael Molony and Selma (Otto) Molony. The Molony farm was three miles south of Denison in Coon Grove.
She received her early education in rural schools and graduated with the Denison High School Class of 1933. She was quite proud of being named to the honor roll and graduating at the age of 16.
After High School, Grace resided in Chicago, Illinois, Denver, Colorado and Oakland, California.
Grace was united in marriage to Warren Robert Hass, in Troy, Kansas, on May 8, 1946. One son, Warren Rand, was born to this union in 1948.
From the mid-40’s to the mid 60’s Grace owned and operated the Tipsy Pine and the G&I Tap, taverns in Denison, Iowa. Warren was employed by Denison Municipal Utilities as the Line Superintendent. In 1957, Grace, Warren and Randy moved to Pasadena, California where they purchased and operated the El Molino Market, a small neighborhood grocery store.
Returning to Denison in 1961, Grace continued to operate the Tipsy, as it was called, and the G&I. G&I stood for Grace and Inez, sisters and co-owners. Inez Richey assumed sole ownership in 1962 and Grace sold the Tipsy in 1965. She was employed by Farmland Foods until she retired in 1969.
Grace and Warren were married for 53 years, until Warren’s passing in 1999. In their many years together they often enjoyed hobbies of hunting, fishing, horse racing and casino trips. Every few years they would venture back to Las Vegas and California for vacations.
Grace was an excellent cook and many of her specialties included wild game that Warren had bagged. Hosting large family gatherings in her home was a joy to her. She was second to none in the completion of crossword puzzles and her daily afternoon rendezvous with her four sisters would not be missed. The five sisters were best friends and they had many, many other friends who would join them at their table of some local establishment. It was quite social and fun was had by all. Grace always said “Who has more fun than me?” All her life, few did!
Grace died on December 15, 2017 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison having attained the age of 100 years, 8 months and 23 days. Preceding her in death were her parents, Michael and Selma Molony, five sisters: Nellie Pieper (Dutch), Eileen Johnson (Roy), Kathleen Petersen (Cyrenus), Inez Richey (Jack), and Ruth Molony; one brother, Joe Molony (Delphine / Gussie).
Survivors include Randy and Nancy Hass of Denison, IA; five grandchildren: Nolan Hass (Diana), Alex Hass (Jennifer), Marty Hass (Angelina), Neil Hass (Shala), and Rita Keiner (Tony); 9 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law: Etta Molony of Carroll, Iowa and Ruby Duncan of Denison, IA.
