Grace Elizabeth (Schoemann) Pauley
Grace Elizabeth (Schoemann) Pauley, daughter of Chris and Sophia (Blum) Schoemann was born on April 17th , 1930 in Harrison County. She was the third child in a family of eight children. She was baptized, received her First Communion, and confirmed at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Grace attended Pleasant Ridge Country School through the 8th grade and completed her high school education at St. Mary’s School in Portsmouth in 1948. On April 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Andrew Pauley at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. The couple lived on a farm southeast of Panama and raised seven children: Melinda, Denice, Kris, Doug, Daniel, Pat, and Julie.
Grace was a stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, dancing, playing cards, and most importantly, spending time with her family. She worked at the St. Mary’s School lunch program in Panama for many years and later worked at a daycare center in Harlan. She also helped care for her parents.
Grace moved into Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan in January 2023. Elm Crest quickly became her home. She enjoyed socializing with the residents and workers, playing cards with family and other residents, playing bingo, regular visitors, proudly introducing her family to all, and eating ice cream on a regular basis. She greatly appreciated the loving care she received from the staff. Grace was preceded in death by her husband: Andrew; her parents: Chris & Sophia; sisters: Sr. Elaine, Sr. Mary & Sr. Josephine; brothers: Gene and Fr. Robert Schoemann; two grandchildren: Allison Kreher and Angel Pauley.
Grace is survived by her seven children, Melinda (Dale) Kreher of Omaha NE, Denice (Steve) Nie of Jesup IA, Kris (Jerry) Hermsen of Dubuque IA, Doug (Joan) Pauley of Columbus NE, Daniel (Alicia) Pauley of Guthrie Center IA, Pat (Sandy) Pauley of Honey Creek IA, Julie (Guyle) Sonderman of Portsmouth IA; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, John Schoemann of Portsmouth IA; sister, Ceil Langer of Arvada CO; sister-in-law, Thelma Schoemann of Portsmouth IA.
