Graham Gould, son of Russell and Florence (Holmquest) Gould, was born in Harlan, Iowa, on November 13, 1940. He was raised on his parents horse farm just outside of Harlan. He graduated from the Harlan High School with the class of 1959 and then attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa where he received his bachelor’s degree and played football. He also served his country honorably in the Iowa National Guard.
Graham trained and showed American Saddlebred, Arabian, Morgan, Appaloosa and Quarter horses across Iowa and nationally through his stable, the Piney Knoll Farm. He participated in regional and world championship shows earning many national points. He was the director, vice president and president of the Iowa Horse Show Association an was enshrined into the Iowa Horseman’s Hall of Fame in 2000. He also judged horses and helped at many of Iowa State Fairs through the years. Locally, he was a project leader of the horse 4-H club passing on his knowledge and love of horses to younger riders. He was known for his skills as a horse trainer, trader and showman which was his lifelong love and occupation.
Graham was both, a long term Mason and Shriner belonging both to the Perian Lodge of Harlan, Iowa where he was Worshipful Master and the Grove Lodge in Marne, Iowa where he was twice Worshipful Master. He also served as District Lecturer and helped members achieve higher ranks within the Masonic Order. As a Shriner, Noble Graham belonged to the Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City, Iowa and very active with the T-Patrol.
Graham died at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 24, 2018, attaining the age of seventy seven years, four months, and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his father Russell T. Gould, his mother Florence Gould, his brother James J. Gould and his sister Barbra Ann (Gould) Hess. He is survived by his nieces, nephews, cousins, Masonic Lodge Brothers, fellow Shrine Nobles, and his longtime friend William MacQuarrie.
The family thanks Milo Schnider of Council Bluffs, Kirsten Didier of Omaha, and St Croix Hospice for their devoted care of Graham during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to in Graham’s name to a Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
