Harlan Reuel King was born on February 9, 1949 to Harvey and Judith (Wangberg) King in Wichita, Kansas. He was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, Kansas, later becoming a member of the Catholic Church. He attended elementary school in Hickerson, Kansas, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On August 28, 1971, Harlan was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Reisz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. They became parents to three children: Renee, Heather, and Erik. He worked in the building maintenance field and split time between their homes in Omaha and Panama, where he worked for Panama Transfer.
Harlan enjoyed fishing at Ten Mile Lake in Minnesota and in area ponds near Panama, and wandering down the dirt roads of Shelby County. He played and coached softball and baseball but his favorite past time was spending time with his family and enjoying his grandkids.
Harlan died on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa at the age of sixty-six years, eleven months, and seventeen days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of forty-four years Barbara King of Omaha, Nebraska; daughters Renee and her husband Marty Schwery of Panama, Iowa and Heather and her husband Rob Combs of Omaha; son Erik King of Omaha; eight grandchildren: Taylor, Gabi, Kobe, Matt, Jayden, Delaney, Danica, and Tesanee; other family members and friends.
