Harley Edwin Nihsen was born on November 10, 1931 to Nicholas and Emma (Halm) Nihsen in Shelby County, Iowa. He attended Minden High School and graduated in 1950, and also worked on the family farm.
Harley met Shirley (Groene) at the “Music Box” dance hall in Omaha. They were married on March 23 (Shirley’s birthday) 1958 in Winslow, Nebraska. There were four children born to them: Ronald, Marsha, Carol, and Amy. After their marriage, they farmed near Persia before they settled on their present farm near Minden in 1967.
Harley enjoyed farming and helping others. When he wasn’t farming, you could find him helping out at the Service Station in Minden. He also enjoyed a cup of coffee with good friends, reading the comic section of the newspaper and playing the card game of Schafkopf with his brothers.
Harley passed away at Risen Son Christian Village on Sunday, April 27, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-two years, five months, and seventeen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: infants, Allen and Dean and Virgil, Kenneth, Harold, Paul, sister-in-law Erma Nihsen and his wife of fifty-six years Shirley.
He will be missed by his children: Ronald Nihsen and his wife Denise of Avoca, Iowa, Marsha and her husband Arlan Darrington of Neola, Iowa, Carol Nihsen of Minden, Iowa, and Amy and her husband Rick Miller of Phoenix, Arizona; four grandchildren: Mandy and her husband Derek Johnson, Veronica Nihsen, Nicole Darrington, and Adam Nihsen; three step-grandchildren: Shawn Darrington and his wife Katie, Scott Darrington and his wife Sara, and Cory Darrington and his wife Abby; one great-grandson Elias Harley Johnson; five step-great-grandchildren: Lexie, Kinsley, Thomas, Easton, and Avett; brothers Grant Nihsen and his wife Lois of Crescent, Iowa and Elden Nihsen and his wife Beth of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sisters-in-law Lavon Nihsen of Council Bluffs and Judy Nihsen of Minden, Iowa; other family members and friends.
