Harold “Shorty” William Bintz was born to Anna E. (Denbeck) and George W. Bintz, on August 24, 1928, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended grade school in York Center Country Schools and attended Minden High School in Minden, Iowa.

Shorty was raised on the family farm southwest of Minden. He spent his entire life there except for two years honorably serving his country in the Korean War. Upon returning from war in 1953, Shorty worked at a south Omaha packing house, until starting to farm the family farm in 1954.

Shorty met the love of his life, Sandra L. Bullock and was married on August 14, 1955 at Shelby Presbyterian Church in Shelby, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Steve, Connie, Patti, and Nancy.

In Shorty’s spare time, he enjoyed wood working and tinkering with new ideas in his shop. He especially relished operating a fanning mill cleaning grain for a wide area of farmers meeting and making a lot of new friends. No one was a stranger to him. He also liked to fish after he retired and share stories at the coffee shop. Shorty was a member of United Church of Christ in Minden and a sixty-four year active member of the Minden American Legion Post 437, fulfilling a term as Commander.

Shorty died February 9, 2017, at Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, five months, and sixteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Pauline Plumb; and brothers Paul and Lloyd.

He leaves to mourn his wife of sixty-one years, Sandra Bintz of Minden; children Steve Bintz and his wife Janet of Neola, Iowa; Connie and her husband Rick Volz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Patti and her husband Steve Hibbeler of Phoenix, Arizona; and Nancy and her husband Tom Fischer of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Stacy Springgate, Pamela Volz, C.J. Lattimore, Mindy Rawlston, Kevin Bintz, Tyler Fischer, Cash Hibbeler, and Kari Hibbeler; great-grandchild Pearl Springgate; sister-in laws Liane Bintz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Lois Bintz of Ponca City, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in Shorty's memory to Minden Fire & Rescue or American Legion Post No. 437.
