Harold "Woots" Hoffmann Sr.
April 18, 1936 — February 27, 2020
Harold “Woots” Hoffmann Sr. (83), born April 18, 1936 in Panama, Iowa, went to the big farm in the sky on February 27th, 2020. We are unclear if it was the record low farm markets or the stress of the presidential impeachment that set him on his downhill course. Throughout the course of his illness he was surrounded by his bride of 60 years Bonnie (Basler) Hoffmann and his three children Monica (Pat) Martin, Patricia Hoffmann, and Harold (Wendy) Hoffmann Jr. Left to farm the land, tend the cattle, clean out the machine shed, and take care of Grandma Bonnie are 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
There to greet him in Heaven are his parents Art and Irene Hoffmann, his brothers Gene (Alice/Elaine) Hoffmann, Robert (Shirley) Hoffmann, sister Agnus Hoffmann, and infant son Gene Paul Hoffmann. Left to pray for him on Earth are his sisters Marie (Daniel) McCarthy and Alice (Dean) Mogensen.
He will be loved and remembered as the first “write-in” Mayor of Hancock, Iowa serving two successful terms from 2015-2019. He appreciated the kindness shown by the people of Hancock when his family moved to the area in 1950 and felt serving as Mayor of this city would show his appreciation for their kindness. He farmed for 67 years and started Agri-Metro Realty and Hoffmann Insurance. He was a member of St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Finance Council, The Diocesan Pastoral Council, The National Guard (1958 -1968), The Oakland Hat Dancers, and a devotee of Fox News.
Known by his favorites as Grandpa Woots, he will no longer be around to call the great-grandkids “bummies” and encourage apple pie and ice cream for breakfast. He would, however, like to encourage other family members to continue this tradition.
At his death he knew his wife, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and most of his relatives loved him. He was prepared to meet his maker. His only regret was not being able to operate his new disk in the spring of 2020.
