Harold Francis Schwarte “Harry” was born on December 26, 1932 to Joseph and Helen (Ratigan) Schwarte in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and attended school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

After his schooling, he worked on the family farm before moving to Handicap Village in Clear Lake, Iowa. When New Hope Village was built in Carroll, Iowa, Harry was one of the first residents. He lived there for thirty-six years.

Harry worked at the workshop at New Hope Village, one of the restaurants in Carroll, and volunteered his time at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.

He enjoyed woodworking, putting puzzles together, and watching western shows. He was a proud member of the Lions Club and belonged to the New Hope bowling team.

Harry died on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty years and seven months. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Gene, Mike, and Dwayne Schwarte.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Irene Reischl of Manning, Iowa, Albert Schwarte and his wife Gay of Defiance, Iowa, Sr. Madonna Schwarte of Omaha, Nebraska, Sr. Darlene Schwarte of Davenport, Iowa, Thelma and her husband Gordon Nelson of Harlan, Iowa, Karen and her husband Clarence Brinker of Harlan, Iowa, Richard Schwarte and his wife Myrna of Manilla, Iowa, and Joe Schwarte and his wife Vernita of Defiance, Iowa; sister-in-law Marilyn Schwarte of Manilla, Iowa and Glenda Hall of Defiance, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
