Harold George Zvorak was born on July 2, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to George and Margaret (Larsen) Zvorak. He worked with a relative on the railroad in his teen years during the summers. He graduated from high school in Tyler, Minnesota but left one week before his graduation ceremony to join the United States Merchant Marines.
He served during World War II and Peacetime and suffered a knee injury during the war that resulted in a long recovery period at a Genoa, Italy hospital. During his service, he traveled all over the world for over 27 years, until his honorable discharge from the United States Merchant Marines.
Harold farmed and raised livestock in Minnesota until he suffered a heart attack in the 1970s. He moved to Walnut, Iowa in the 1980's to sell antiques. He met Isabel Clemens at an antique show in 1984. The couple married on October 11, 1990 in Avoca and made their home in Walnut.
Harold was a gentle man who took delight in helping others. He enjoyed listening to Big Band music and watching the show Big Bang Theory. He loved chocolate, pea salad, dogs and wearing hats he received from his daughter Laura. He also enjoyed restoration, spending time in Custer, South Dakota and doing things with his wife, children and grandchildren. Harold started working at a young age and continued until 6 weeks prior to his death.
He died on Friday, August 30, 2013 at his residence in Walnut having attained the age of 87 years, 1 month and 28 days. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Isabel Zvorak of Walnut, Iowa; daughter Laura Samel of Lafayette, Colorado; son Curt Beireis of Carson, Iowa; step-daughter Michel (Reggie) Prince of North St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Ashley Beireis (Ngyun), Aaron Beireis, Samantha Beireis, and Jacob Prince; other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors was held at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 6:00 P.M. Pastor David Krueger officiated the service. Inurnment was held in the Russell Cemetery in Russell, Minnesota on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 2:00 P.M.
