Harry Detlef Roenfeld, son of Harry John and Sophie (Fisher) Roenfeld, was born on November 30, 1924 on a farm near Glenwood, Iowa. He attended country school near Glenwood and was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mineola, Iowa. After high school, Harry served his country honorably in Japan during World War II from 1945 to 1947.
On February 18, 1948, Harry was united in marriage to Helen Marie Nielson at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Neta Faye, Lora Lee and Bruce Allen. Harry and Helen began their farming career at Helen’s homeplace near Rorbeck where they farmed for twelve years. In 1960, they then moved east of Walnut to farm for a year. He then worked for Ken Fredericksen and Suhr Brother Trucking. In 1960 they moved south of Elk Horn where they farmed with the Hansen Brothers until moving into Elk Horn in 1965 when Harry began working for Petersen Brother’s Trucking out of Jacksonville. He then went to work for the Elk Horn and Hancock Elevators until his retirement in 1996 but still worked part time doing odd jobs around Elk Horn and driving for Hoegh Trucking.
He died on November 21, 2014 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-nine years; eleven months and twenty-two days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Wilbert, Marvin and Robert.
Harry is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Helen Roenfeld of Elk Horn, Iowa; his children: Neta and her husband Terry Sander of Elk, Iowa; Lora and her husband James Rucker of Staunton, Illinois and Bruce Roenfeld and his wife Marcia of Atlantic, Iowa; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; his sister Evelyn Jensen of Alexandria, Minnesota; nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.
