Harvey Alfred Leinen, son of Zeno and Viola (Schwery) Leinen, was born on a farm near Portsmouth, Iowa on March 15, 1936. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended St. Mary’s Catholic High School where he graduated in 1954. Harvey worked on the family farm during school and after graduation.

On May 7, 1960, Harvey was united in marriage to Charlotte Kremer at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa. The couple had met at a dance hall in Avoca, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Julie, Tracy and Scott.

Harvey worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad as a section hand for four years as well as working as a hired hand for area farmers. He then entered into a partnership with his brother Jim farming near Denison, Iowa. While living in the Denison area, the family belonged to the St. Rose Of Lima Catholic Church. The couple’s early married life was all about work, however Harvey loved sports and was active on several baseball teams. After the farming partnership was dissolved, the family moved to the Manning, Manilla area to farm.

In 1978, the family moved to the Harlan area and began farming in the Jacksonville area and became members of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Harlan. During this time, Harvey also worked on construction and eventually started his own construction company, Leinen Construction. Harvey enjoyed his children’s activities and sporting events. Even after his stroke, he could be seen attending their events. And that was equally true about his grandchildren’s events. He was a strong family man where hunting and fishing were family events. His construction crews also enjoyed several fishing expeditions to South Dakota.

Because of his health, Harvey became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center and The Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa. It was here where he died on October 2, 2014, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, six months and seventeen days. In addition to his parents, Harvey was preceded in death by his sisters Verlee Leinen and Linda Daoust.

Survivors include his wife of over fifty-four years, Charlotte Leinen of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Julie Leinen of Harlan; Tracy Leinen of Boise, Idaho and Scott Leinen and his wife Dena of Harlan; grandchildren: Kelsey and Derek Leinen at school in Ames and Haley and Macie Leinen at home in Harlan; his siblings: Ursula Bruck of Harlan; Jim Leinen and his wife Dorothy of Denison, Iowa; Orville Leinen and his wife Kathleen of Panora, Iowa, Eunice Blum and her husband Gil Loeffler of Panama, Iowa; Mildred and her husband Jerry Brus of Denison, Iowa and Zita and her husband Gaylen Smith of Portsmouth, Iowa; in-laws: Mark Daoust of Atlantic, Iowa; Bernard Kremer of Council Bluffs and Janice Kremer of Virginia; other relatives and many friends.
