Harvey L. Schrum was born on a farm in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, September 30, 1919, the son of Gustav and Elsie Wegner Schrum. He was received into God?s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Eagan, South Dakota, August 29, 1926 and confirmed in his Christian Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa, December 20, 1936. He received his education at the Aspinwall Independent School through the eighth grade and then farmed with his father in the Botna area. On August 7, 1949, Harvey was united in marriage with Aloha Holmes at the Methodist Church in Manilla, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children, Deanna, Dean and Dennis. They made their home in Manilla for a few years before moving to Denison in 1956. Harvey was employed throughout his working years as a heavy equipment operator for Crawford County, Comstock and Son Gravel at Dedham and for G. A. Finley in Harlan from which he retired in 1988. He enjoyed yard work and helping his mother-in-law with her house and lawn. In younger years he enjoyed attending family birthdays and playing cards. In his leisure hours he enjoyed watching ballgames and Lawrence Welk on television, listening to the polka music, reading, working puzzles and trips to Minneapolis to visit their daughter. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Harvey died early Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home in Denison. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 88 years, 6 months and 5 days. Including his parents, Harvey was preceded in death by two infant brothers and one daughter-in-law, Rose Mary Schrum. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of over 58 years, Aloha Schrum of Denison, three children, Deanna Schrum of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dean Schrum of Ames, Iowa, and Dennis Schrum of Spencer, Iowa, one grandson, Tim Schrum of Ankeny, Iowa, one brother, Lester Schrum and wife, Estella of Manilla,Iowa, three sisters, Margie Schnoor of Manilla, Iowa, LaDonna Wiese of Denison, and Joann and husband, Jack Smith of Pomona, Kansas, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service include the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art", "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me" and "The Lamb" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Pallbearers included Tim Schrum, Gary Keesling, Frank Zimmer, Jerry Buller, Ron Schnoor and Allen Wiese. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the interment all were invited to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon served by Zion Ladies Aid.
