Hazel Hansen was born on August 26, 1924 in Shelby County, Iowa, to Hans and Mary (Petersen) Hansen. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. She attended country school at Jackson No. 2 through the eighth grade and later received her high school diploma through the GED program.
On May 3, 1948, she was united in marriage to Norman Hansen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Two children were born to this union: Randall and Dixie.
Hazel raised the children and enjoyed attending their school programs, the free movies in Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Friendship Club. She was involved in a women�s circle and bible study at the church and was briefly part of the handbell choir. Hazel loved to play sports and played first base on the softball team for many years.
When Norman operated the garage and service station in Jacksonville, Hazel worked in the front office and did the bookkeeping. She later began employment at Larsen�s Shoe Store and then worked in the Dietary Department at Myrtue Memorial Hospital for fifteen years, retiring in 1989. Hazel and Norman lived in Jacksonville for thirty-nine years before selling their home and moving into Harlan in 1987.
She enjoyed participating on bowling leagues, playing in card groups, and traveling with the Commanders Club to various states and to Canada.
After Norman�s death in January of 1993, Hazel continued to live in their Harlan home and remained a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in March of 2008 and died there on Monday, December 27, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-six years, four months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Tom and wife Mabel and Russell and wife Dorothy; and sisters Myrtle and husband Glen Klindt and Mabel and husband Everett Greve; sister-in-law Leota Hansen; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Sonny and LaVina Weiss, Harold Hansen, Ardelle and Alvin Andersen, Herman and Henrietta Greve, and Ardell Hansen.
Hazel is survived by her son Randy Hansen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter Dixie Clark of Omaha, Nebraska; granddaughter Jenifer Negron of Milford, Nebraska; great-grandsons: Todd Osmun, Jr. and Kage Negron also of Milford; brother Ed Hansen and his wife Catherine of Harlan, Iowa; brothers-in-law Merle Hansen of Brayton, Iowa and Don Hansen and his wife Louella of Walnut, Iowa; sister-in-law Mary Hansen of Walnut; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jon Hansen, Robert Klindt, Jerry Klindt, Ron Hansen, Jerry Hansen, and Todd Osmun. Interment was held at Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville.
