Helen Elizabeth Goshorn, daughter of Claus and Bertha (Dohrmann) Martens, was born on June 7, 1921, in Shelby, Iowa. She was baptized at St. John’s Church in Persia and was confirmed at United Lutheran Church in Shelby. Helen graduated from Shelby High School with the class of 1940.

On July 29, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Orville Goshorn in St Joseph, Missouri. Two children were born to this union: Judyth and Richard. After their wedding, Helen helped Orville on the farm while making a home for her family.

Helen was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby were she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and was an active member of Ladies Aid and the chairman of the Altar Guild for many years.

Helen enjoyed doing ceramics, volunteering for numerous community organizations, and participating in the neighborhood club. Helen also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the joy of her life. She treasured her memories of taking family vacations to Minnesota to go fishing.

On October 1, 2001, Helen became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa.

Helen died on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, nine months, and twenty-eight days. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; her sisters: Agnes Alstadt, Martha Lissi, and Loretta Jessen; and her brother Marvin Martens.

She is survived by her children Judy Gilbert of Bethesda, Maryland and Richard Goshorn and his wife Bev of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; her brother Robert Martens and his wife Mariann of Walnut, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Rev. Duane Anunson officiating the 10:30 AM service. Interment was held at the Shelby Cemetery with Bill Goshorn, Wilma Best, William Boettger, Ron Greenwood, Pat Jensen, Mildred Bair, Gene Wahling, and Lynda Wahling acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Adam Goshorn, Elizabeth Gilbert, Alicia Knau, David Gilbert, Darren Goshorn, and Kevin Goshorn.
