Helen Vernice Johnson, the daughter of Ira and Lula (Sease) Keisler, was born in Gilbert, South Carolina on November 14, 1920 and was the fourth of seven children in the family. Helen grew up in Gilbert and graduated from Gilbert High School.
After graduation Helen went to work at the Charleston Navy Yard and this is where she met her future husband, Harold Ray Johnson of Elk Horn, Iowa. After moving back to the Midwest, they were united in marriage on July 3, 1946. To this union two daughters were born: Cheryl Kay and Brenda Rae. The family settled in Avoca and bought the Avoca Cold Storage - a full service butcher shop. Helen and Harold worked together in this adventure.
Helen was always a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a wonderful Christian witness. Following the death of Harold in 1971, Helen returned to her home town in South Carolina and went to work at Monroe's where she packaged calculators. After an early retirement, Helen enjoyed having company, going places and visiting friends and family. She took pleasure in the outdoors, sewing, Iris and Peony gardening, cultivating large vegetable gardens and canning. In 2004 she moved to Richardson, Texas where she spent her remaining years.
Helen became a resident of the Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Plano, Texas and this is where she went to heaven on May 28, 2007, having attained the age of eighty six years, six months and fourteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; four brothers: O'Neil, Herman, Vaughn and Smyrle Keisler and two sisters: Roberta Karan and Margaret Rankin.
