Helen June Kuhr
Helen June Kuhr was born to Anton Otto and Sophie Dora (Plahn) Peters on June 30, 1923 on the farm near Walnut, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, which later became Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. She went to school in Lewis, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1941.
Helen was united in marriage to Maurice Kuhr on March 4, 1944 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Maurice was in the Army and served during World War II. When he returned from the service they moved their home to Walnut, Iowa. Helen and Maurice were the parents of four children: Phyllis, Marlys, Philip and Vicky.
Helen and Maurice were very active members of Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. One of the things Helen did at the church was make ice cream for the Father’s Day Antique Walk. She was also a Firefly for many years and belonged to the Federated Club.
During the time her kids were growing up Helen was a homemaker. She went to work in the 1970's for the Variety Store in Walnut, Iowa and in the 1980's she worked for the Walnut Motel. She also worked in housekeeping for the Super 8 in Walnut for twenty five years.
After Maurice’s passing in 1994 Helen continued to live in her home until she moved to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut, Iowa where she lived until just a few weeks before her death.
Helen enjoyed traveling with Maurice, crossword puzzles, reading, gardening, cooking, and sewing. She loved her grandchildren and she especially enjoyed being with them and hearing about all of their activities.
Helen passed away on Thursday October 29, 2015 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center, in Avoca, Iowa having attained the age of ninety two years, three months and twenty nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Maurice, twin daughters - Phyllis Maurine and Marlys Jean; brothers - Lloyd Peters, Ralph Peters, Bernhardt Peters and sisters - Elsa Peters, Faye Fredericksen.
Helen is survived by her son Phil and wife Jackie of Hamburg, Iowa; daughter Vicky and her husband Jim Nash of Wake Forest, North Carolina; grandchildren - Andy Kuhr, Nick Kuhr, and Katie Kuhr of Hamburg, Iowa; Christy and Cassie of Wake Forest, North Carolina; other relatives and friends.
Pastor Steve Lewis led a Funeral Service for Helen on Thursday November 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. Casket bearers were members of the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department. Helen was buried next to Maurice at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa. Pauley Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
