Helen Kathleen Mauritz passed away at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa on April 5, 2020.
Helen was born August 14, 1924 on a farm seven miles north of Odebolt, Iowa. She was the second of 5 children born to Gust and Ruth (Hanson) Johnson. She attended country school near her home through eighth grade and then attended high school in Odebolt. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1942. Following graduation from high school she taught in a country school near Odebolt from September 1942 to May 1944. In September 1944 she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES where she was trained as a pharmacist's mate. After serving at duty stations in Great Lakes, Illinois, Iowa City and Ottumwa, Iowa she was honorably discharged May 1946. After returning from active duty she met Delmar Mauritz at a Covenant Church gathering in Odebolt. They were united in marriage in Odebolt on January 3, 1948.
Helen and Delmar settled down on a farm south of Kiron. They had three children: Forrest, Kathleen and Stanley. Helen and Delmar were very active with church and local civic activities. In 1983 they moved to a house in Kiron and eased into retirement. Delmar delivered Winnebago Motor Homes to dealers all over the United States and into Canada and Helen navigated. They thoroughly enjoyed touring the country and meeting people along the way.
She is survived by her children: Forrest (Patricia) Mauritz, Kathleen Engle, and Stanley (Mary Lu) Mauritz, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delmar and her brother Howard Johnson and one son-in-law, Michael Engle.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services will be held privately at the Kiron cemetery. Pauley Jones Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
