Helen Elizabeth Miller was born February 6, 1934, the daughter of Nicholas Springman, Sr. and Anna (Kloewer) Springman in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, where she remained a lifetime member. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth, where she graduated in 1952. After graduation, she lived in Harlan, and was a waitress at the coffee shop of the Sailor Hotel.
Helen was united in marriage to Edward Miller on October 6, 1954, in Portsmouth. She devoted thirty-seven years of her life to farming with her husband, raising their children and teaching them the values of the Lord, hard work, commitment and loyalty. Helen enjoyed gardening, quilting, embroidery, reading, and playing cards. She’s been known to say, “if there’s not any coffee in heaven, I’m not going.”
Helen passed away peacefully at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, on Monday, July 8, 2019, at the age of eighty-five years.
