Helen Schleimer
June 12, 1934 — June 2, 2017
Helen Mary Schleimer, daughter of Leo and Leora (Nilan) Book was born June 12, 1934 on a farm near Corley, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. She attended grade school at Tennent and Lincoln #1 and graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1955.
After high school, Helen worked at the telephone office in Harlan until she was married to Donald F. Schleimer on February 9, 1957 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Three children were born to this union: Donald R., Carol and Dale. Helen remained at home to raise her children and helped her husband, Donald tend to their farm. After the children were raised, Helen went to cleaning people’s homes.
Helen was a very loving mother and grandmother. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla, where she would help with funerals, singing in the choir, and she also cleaned the church. She was an excellent baker and spent many hours crafting beautiful quilts. She was a member of a quilting group out of Manilla and enjoyed spending time quilting at Greenridge. She also enjoyed attending steam shows and camping during the shows. Helen remained in Irwin after the death of her husband in 2001, she always stayed busy and never really retired.
On Friday, June 2, 2017, Helen died surrounded by her loving family at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-two years, eleven months and twenty-one days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, granddaughter Melanie Schlitz.
She has left to cherish her memory, her son Donald R. Schleimer and his significant other Ellen Bean of Orleans, Vermont; daughters Carol and her husband Brent Spies of Manilla, Iowa; Dale Eng of Irwin, Iowa; grandchildren William Schleimer; Russel Schleimer; Rachel Schleimer; Sarah Rose Schleimer; Jennifer Hartwig; Jessica Haase; Leah Eng; Kira Eng; 5 great-grandchildren; sister Yvonne and her husband Delbert Bruck of Harlan, Iowa; brothers Robert Book and his wife Janice of Atlantic, Iowa; Richard Book and his wife Lois of Colorado Springs, Colorado; other family members and many friends.
