Helen Marie Warner was born on March 2, 1918 to Joe and Gusta (Sohl) Pauley on a farm east of Corley, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan where she remained a lifelong member. At the age of five, her parents purchased a farm southwest of Harlan, Iowa. Helen attended Lincoln Township No. 8 country school, was a member of 4-H and Brownies and later attended Laurel Elementary and Harlan Jr. and Sr. High School where she was a member of the Glee Club and chorus.
On December 2, 1939, Helen was united in marriage to Lyle F. Warner of Avoca, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: Sharon, Ruth, David, and Sheri.
She enjoyed helping Lyle on the farm, sewing, dancing, playing cards, putting puzzles together and playing the organ. Over the years, she worked several part-time jobs - Harlan Coffee Shop and Mickels as a waitress and cashier and in the kitchen at the Baptist Memorial Home.
Helen was a resident of the Avoca Lodge Assisted Living for nearly three years prior to being transferred to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in late October of 2009. This is where she died on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 having attained the age of ninety-five years, five months, and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle in August of 1973, infant daughter Sharon; brothers William and Peter Pauley; sisters Josie Fennern and Irene Hansen; and daughter-in-law Linda Warner.
She is survived by her children: Ruth and her husband David Walter of Omaha, Nebraska, David Warner of Des Moines, Iowa, Sheri and her husband Curt Stephany of Gretna, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Rick and Stacey Walter, Sandra and Dave Dotzler, Julie and David Kijowski, David and Luann Warner, Jr., Colburn and Barb Warner, Michelle and Rick Mulligan, and Samantha, Matthew, and Joseph Stephany; great-grandchildren: Regina and Dylan Walter, Jessica and Eric Meads, Brett and Jessica Dotzler, Caleb Dotzler and his fiancee Kaitlin Wakeman, Timothy and Seth Dotzler, Justin and Jordan Warner, Hannah and Whitney Warner, Joshua and Preston Mulligan; step-great-grandchildren: Alexis and Derek Merrill, Tyler Rono, and Catherine Kijowski; great-great-grandchildren: Ava and Lucas Meads; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Sandra Dotzler, Julie Kijowski, and Samantha Stephany. Serving as casket bearers were Rick Walter, David Warner, Jr., Colburn Warner, Matthew Stephany, Joseph Stephany, and Michelle Mulligan. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
