Henry John Ewoldt was born in Denison, Iowa, December 26, 1936, the son of Emil Henry and Leonora M. Grill Ewoldt. His early years were spent on the farm near the Five Mile House south of Westside, Iowa and he was baptized November 21, 1937 at the Manning Presbyterian Church. During his formative years the family resided at Canyon City, Colorado, and Grand Island, Lexington and Norfolk, Nebraska. He received his education in the communities they resided and during his teenage years he enjoyed woodworking and woodcarving. From April of 1954, until his honorable discharge in November of 1957, Henry served his country in the United States Navy. Following his discharge he was employed for a time on the railroad in DeWitt, Iowa, before returning to Denison. On November 13, 1971, Henry was united in marriage with Ardell Evers at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two sons, Mark and Dale. They made their home on a farm at Denison where Henry raised sheep and hogs and was employed for many years at IBP. In 1989, the family moved to their acreage north of Kiron, Iowa, where he had since resided. In his spare time Henry enjoyed attending his children’s sporting activities and more recently watching the auto races in which Mark participated. He had a great love for animals, especially his dog Coco and his cats. Leisure time activities that occupied his time included gardening, woodworking, landscaping, planting trees, and fishing and attending the Spencer Fair with his brother Virgil. He found great enjoyment spending time and playing with his grandson, Evan. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he had been confirmed May 1, 1972. Henry died at his home Monday, May 16, 2011. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 74 years, 4 months and 20 days. Henry was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law: Ralph Vogt, Alfred Schoenfeld and Derald Evers. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Ardell of Kiron, two sons: Mark Ewoldt and special friend Nancy Zadow and her son Jordon Stief of Dow City, Dale Ewoldt and special friend Carlee Lee and her daughters Payton and Caytlin Lee of Denison; one grandson: Evan Ewoldt of Dow City; brother: Rev. Virgil Ewoldt and wife Bonnie of Milford, Iowa; sisters: Elaine and husband Keith McCuddin of Sioux City, Vera Ewoldt of Prescott, Arizona, Lois Tilton of Manhattan, Kansas; sisters-in-law: Darlene Vogt of Charter Oak, Norma Schoenfeld of Schleswig, Pat Evers of Denison, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Revs. Kurt R. Kaiser and David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by Eldon Hardekopf singing “On The Wings of A Snow White Dove” and the congregation singing “On Eagles Wings” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Pallbearers included Dean Vogt, Lydell Schoenfeld, Clinton McCuddin, Russell McCuddin, Jeff Halder and Leon Schoenfeld. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Following the services the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon served by Zion Ladies Aid.
