Herbert Frank Michael Wegner was born on March 25, 1923 to George and Barbara (Kenkel) Wegner in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. He attended country school through the eighth grade before helping on the family farm and eventually having his own lifelong farming career.
He noticed his future bride at a parish dance, was introduced to her at a wedding, and at the next parish dance, asked her to join him on the dance floor. On August 23, 1944, Herbert and Alice Kaufmann were united in marriage at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. They became parents to six children, surviving the deaths of three infants.
Herbert was an active member of his church, serving on St. Mary’s parish council as well as the Panama town council. He was on the first board of directors of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, and on the board of directors for the Farmer’s Grain and Mercantile Elevator.
His faith was an important part of his life which is evident by how he and Alice passed on their faith and beliefs to their children, praying, and reciting the rosary daily. He enjoyed being involved in his community, having strong relationships with his neighbors and friends, and being a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1741 of Earling.
Herbert and Alice moved in to Panama in 1970 but he continued to farm and help on the family farm almost his entire life.
In January of this year, Herbert became a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home where he died on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the age of ninety-two years and twenty-four days. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, and his sister Orvelyn Bruck.
He is survived by his wife of seventy years Alice Wegner of Panama, Iowa; son Philip Wegner and his wife Carol of Panama; daughters Ruth and her husband Robert Huebert of Panama and Norma and her husband Jan Randall of Cando, North Dakota; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; sister Irene Huebner of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.
