Herbert Wood Profile Photo
Herbert “Herb” Lee Wood was born on March 20, 1948, the son of Martin and Helen Mae (Daisey) Wood in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was one of nine children and learned the value of working with others. Herb moved to Walnut, Iowa, and owned Walnut Sanitation for thirty-eight years and employed six people. His employees learned quickly his motto was “Never be late!”

Herb married LaVonne Heatherington on October 9, 1971, in Fort Dodge. To this union three children were born: Herbert “Runk”; Jessica; and Martin “Jake”. In Herb’s daily life, he put his family first even with the amount of time needed for owning his own business.

In Herb’s spare time, he enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, wood working, and watching birds and nature. He especially cherished his children and grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. He loved the people of Walnut and worried about others before himself. He had a great sense of humor and believed everything could be fixed with black tape.

Herb died Sunday, July 2, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of sixty-nine years, three months, and twelve days. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Raymond Wood, Ron Wood, Kenny Wood, Dennis Wood, and Dwight Wood; and sisters Delores Bird and Vicki Wood.

Herb is survived by his wife of forty-five years LaVonne Wood of Walnut; son Herbert “Runk” Wood and his wife Jodi of Avoca, Iowa; daughter Jessica Newcomb of Walnut; son Martin “Jake” Wood and his wife Breanne of Shelby, Iowa; grandchildren Dillon Wood, Dalton Wood, Gavin Newcomb, Bailey Wood, Payton Newcomb, Leighton Wood and Skyler Pool; sister Wanda Seger of Madison, South Dakota; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
