Hilda Elsie Christiansen, daughter of Gustav and Lizzie (Bladt) Sindt, was born on February 10, 1921 near Shelby, Iowa. She attended school in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School.
On November 14, 1942, Hilda was united in marriage to Lester Christiansen in Omaha, Nebraska. After their marriage, they farmed near Shelby area and later near Jacksonville. In addition to helping Lester on the farm, Hilda worked various jobs including a switchboard operator in Jacksonville, Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan, the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn and the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan where she worked in housekeeping for over twenty-four years before her retirement.
In 1982, Hilda and Lester moved to Harlan. While Hilda was still working at Elm Crest, she walked to work every day and enjoyed working in her yard. She also was an avid quilter and seamstress making countless wedding dresses and other articles of clothing by hand. She also loved spending time with her family especially babysitting her granddaughters puppy.
In April of 2015, Hilda became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. She died on October 9, 2018 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-seven years, seven months and twenty-nine days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lester and her siblings: Emma Plagmann, Alma Jones, Mabel Stuhr, Gus Sindt, Jr., Lizzie Sindt, Ella Berg, Olga Sindt, Edna Nielsen and Pearl Sindt.
She is survived by her children: Lanny Christiansen of North Platte, Nebraska and Marie Brower of Harlan; her grandchildren: Mark Brower of Harlan and Tammy and her husband Ron Less of Rapid City, South Dakota; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
