Homer Gerald Hanson was born on January 13, 1919 in Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa to Andrew and Olga (Rasmussen) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul�s Lutheran Church in Polk Township, Iowa, and graduated in 1936 from Kirkman High School.
Homer worked for Westinghouse Electric in Omaha, Nebraska, as a city salesman for one year. On September 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Alden at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Holly, John, and Jay.
Homer was a long-time Farm Bureau member serving Polk Township as Farm Bureau director as well as a legislative and budget committee member and a field assessor for Polk and Douglas Townships. He also served as a Shelby County Beef Producer Association director and served multiple terms on the Irwin-Kirkman Community School board. He served as a deacon and council member of St. Paul�s Lutheran Church in Irwin and was also part of the Kirkman Alumni Association.
After his retirement from farming, he sold real estate for Paul Pauley. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren�s music concerts. He loved to play cards and in his younger days, would love going to dances.
Homer died on Monday, October 6, 2008, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, eight months, and twenty-three days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, and his brothers Raynard and Alvin.
He is survived by his children: Holly and her husband Lloyd Vandemark of Harlan, Iowa, John Hanson and his wife Gwen of Kirkman, Iowa, and Jay Hanson and his wife Alicia of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Megan, Allison, and expecting the third shortly; his brother Orlando Hanson and his wife Ladelle of Manilla, Iowa, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service was held on Friday, October 10, 2008 beginning at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Steve Chellew officiated with Megan Hanson, Allison Hanson, Lloyd Vandemark, Greg Juler, Tim Nielsen, and Gary Hanson serving as casket bearers. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery.
