Howard Edward Iversen was born in Schleswig, Iowa, July 19, 1920, the son of Hans and Sidsel Marie Jensen Iversen. He was raised on the farm in Morgan Township and received his education in the Morgan #2 rural school. Following his education he worked at home and for area farmers. During World War II, from March of 1942 until his honorable discharge in December of 1945 (or three years, nine months and fourteen days as he was known to say), Howard served his country in the United States Navy serving on the USS Pyro AE1. After his service he returned to Schleswig where he farmed for two years until he was injured. He then was employed in various occupations in the Schleswig area including running the VFW Club. On May 9, 1952, Howard was united in marriage with Charlene Moeller in San Antonio, Texas. Their union was blessed with five children: Robert, Ross, Lori, Jim and Ann. After Charlene’s discharge from the service they made their home in Schleswig until moving to Vail in 1954 to manage a farm for Judge Powers. In 1957 they started farming for themselves and then moved to another farm south of Vail in 1959. They moved to their present farm one mile north of Vail in 1963 where Howard continued his farming career until retiring in 1982. In his spare time Howard enjoyed playing cards, reading, going to the casinos, traveling and especially enjoyed ship reunions with his shipmates of the USS Pyro AE1. He was a member of the American Legion Post 65, Vail, Iowa, and the V.F.W. Post 3930, Schleswig, Iowa. Howard died Friday afternoon, June 28, 2013, at his home in rural Vail, Iowa.
