Howard Ernest Krohnke was born in Schleswig, Iowa, November 15, 1917 to Edward and Amanda Henkel Krohnke. He was baptized at Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig and attended the country school. Later he farmed with his father and family and was also a known entrepreneur as having had several businesses that served the Schleswig and Kiron communities over the years. He went from owning a chicken business in Schleswig, Iowa to having operated a restaurant-bar-antique shop in Kiron, Iowa. He also owned and rented other buildings in Kiron that held businesses that kept the community going. He was a fun-loving father and always wanted to help others. Howard loved to have a good time enjoying life playing cards with his friends and going to the casinos. To everyone that knew him he was known as “Howie”, the guy with the western hat. Howard died Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa having attained the age of 93 years, 9 months, 21 days. Including his parents, Edward and Amanda Krohnke, Howard was also preceded in death by his sisters: Luella Peters and Joyce Krohnke, his brother Edgar Krohnke, brother-in-law Kenneth Peters, and nephew Doug Krohnke. Survivors include one daughter, Priscilla Krohnke-Gopal and husband, Jim of Holt, Michigan; former wife, Janice Krohnke of Gering, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Burenett Krohnke of Denison,Iowa; former brother-in-law and sister-in-law Barbara and Gary Kopaska of Guthrie Center, Iowa, niece-in-law, Carol Krohnke of Schleswig, Iowa; grand nephews, cousins, other loved ones and friends. Graveside funeral services and interment were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2011, at the Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. Trish Underberg officiating. Honorary pallbearer was Lowell Aldag. Those serving as pallbearers included Dylan Krohnke, Sean Krohnke, Jeff Krohnke, Dan Gangestad, Ryan Gangestad and Ted Aldag. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
