Howard Albert Schnieder was born on September 19, 1926 to Albert and Viola (Gress) Schnieder near Hancock, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Tennant, Iowa and attended school in Hancock, Iowa.
He began his farming career after his schooling working for his parents near Hancock. Howard enlisted in the United States Army on October 17, 1945, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged from military service on January 14, 1947, and returned home to continue farming.
After his marriage to Hazel Hansen Knudsen on March 30, 1977 in Red Oak, Iowa, they farmed east of Corley, Iowa, where they raised Angus cattle. During their time living in Tennant, Iowa, Howard had a large garden. He was always quick to help his neighbors whenever they needed help.
Howard retired in 1990 and had lived at Peace haven Home in Walnut, Iowa for the last three years until his admission to Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa in August of this year. It was at Salem that he died on Saturday, November 5, 2011 having attained the age of eighty-five years, one month, and seventeen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Alberta Sorensen and Dorothy Sorensen, and brother Frank Schnieder.
He is survived by his wife Hazel Schnieder of Walnut, Iowa; step-daughter Marjorie and her husband Jerry McIntosh of Council Bluffs, Iowa; step-son Delmar Knudsen and his wife Carol of Council Bluffs; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Orris Drake officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Shirley Pattee accompanied vocalist Reva Jean Drake. Serving as casket bearers were Doug Schnieder, Dan Schnieder, Bryan Knudsen, Mason Ridlen, Jim Hansen, and Paul Petersen. Military Rites were conducted by the Avoca American Legion Post No. 227 at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa.
