Irene Beatrice Christensen was born on September 28, 1915 to Hans and Ingeborg (Jensen) Sorensen in Harlan, Iowa. She attended school through the seventh grade and stayed in the Harlan area her entire life.
On May 30, 1933, she was united in marriage to Louis Christensen in Omaha, Nebraska. Four sons were born to this union: Edward, Kenneth, Conrad, and Stephen. Irene helped her husband in his printing business when the boys were young. As they got a little older, she worked outside the home part-time in the Harlan School system but always managed to keep up with her family and events.
She liked to read, particularly mystery books and enjoyed cooking for her family. Because of her and her husband’s Danish heritage, she was especially good at preparing Danish dishes such as frikadeller.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan for over sixty years. Irene stayed in the home she and Louis built in 1950 until going to Elm Crest Retirement Home in October of 2010. It was there that she died on Monday, January 24, 2011, having attained the age of ninety-five years, three months, and twenty-seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her infant son Conrad; two sisters: Lillian Wolf and Leona Jensen, and brother Harvey Sorensen.
Irene is survived by her sons: Edward Christensen of San Angelo, Texas, Kenneth Christensen of Anaheim, California, and Stephen Christensen and his wife Evelyn of Evanston, Illinois; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Rev. Dr. David Swinton officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Carl Christensen, Andrew Christensen, Edward Christensen, Kenneth Christensen, and Stephen Christensen. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa
